How to start collecting, part 8: your first year
A plan, a budget, a cadence, and the seven mistakes everyone makes once. The end of the series and the start of the record.
Seven parts of rules make a plan only if they turn into a calendar. Here is the year, then the mistakes, then the disclaimer that matters.
The plan
- Months 1 to 3: one lane, raw cards, small money. Learn to read sold listings and population reports. Keep the record from the first purchase.
- Months 4 to 6: your first graded purchase, verified in the registry before and after delivery. Set up storage properly. Decide your monthly budget and hold to it.
- Months 7 to 9: your first submission, if and only if the math from part 2 works and the grader you want is not paused. Track the wait as capital you cannot touch.
- Months 10 to 12: your first sale or trade. Learn what liquidity really looks like: how long it took, what fees came out, what the buyer asked to see. The record you kept is what makes this easy.
The budget
A number you would not miss, monthly, and a separate line for protection and grading. Collectibles are illiquid; money in slabs is not money in the bank. If a purchase would need to be sold in a hurry to cover something else, it is the wrong purchase.
Seven mistakes everyone makes once
- Buying from asking prices instead of sold prices.
- Paying Friends and Family to save a seller a fee.
- Grading modern bulk and hoping.
- Skipping the sleeve on a card that later matters.
- Not writing down what you paid.
- Trusting a label instead of the registry.
- Chasing five lanes in year one.
The disclaimer that matters
Cards and collectibles can be assets. They can also lose value, sit unsold for months, and cost money to hold. Nothing in this series predicts a price. What it gives you is what serious holders of any asset have: a record, a cost basis, verified provenance, known holding costs, and a plan for selling. That is what SlabX is built to keep for you, for free, on every plan.
Series 2, Collect like an investor, starts next month. If you want the whole thing in one place, the SlabX Starter Guide is free with a SlabX account, and the full guide is coming to Amazon.
Not financial advice. Collectibles are illiquid and can lose value. Prices and grading fees quoted are as published on the dates named and change often.
