How to read a grading cert number

Every graded item carries a certification number, usually on the label and often in a barcode or QR code too. That number is the item's identity with the grader. It is also the single most useful thing to check before you pay for a slab, because a label can be swapped or faked but the grader's registry cannot.

What the numbers look like

• PSA: 7 to 10 digits. PSA also grades tickets, packs, and autographs under the same scheme.
• BGS (Beckett): numeric, with subgrades on the label for centering, corners, edges, and surface.
• CGC Cards: 10 digits on current labels, 7 to 8 on older ones. CGC also grades comics and video games.
• SGC: 7 digits, sometimes shown as 7 digits, a dash, then 3 more.
• TAG Grading: one letter followed by 7 digits, tied to a full digital report.
• PCGS: 7 to 8 digits for coins and banknotes.

What a lookup gives you

Each grader runs a public lookup page for its own certs. At minimum you get the item's description and grade. PSA and PCGS add the variety, the label type, and images; PCGS adds its price guide; TAG adds subgrades and population; CGC comics show a fair market value on newer labels. Population, the count of that item at that grade, is the one field graders treat differently: some publish it, some only inside their own apps.

The habit worth building

Look up the cert before you buy, and again when the slab arrives. Compare the description, the grade, and the images to the object in your hand. If anything disagrees, walk away. One more rule of thumb: a slab whose grader has no public lookup at all is a slab you are buying on trust alone. Price it that way.
